ArticlesTHE UNHOLY TRINITY: FAT, FOOD AND AGE - WHY WE GOT SO FAT IN THE FIRST PLACE? Back to the Basics It’s just too much. And the more we fret, the more we eat. And the more we eat, the greater our frustration becomes. A recent survey of Americans by the Calorie Council found: 65 per cent believe they are overweight. 24 per cent say they are on a diet. 78 per cent use low-calorie products at least once every couple of weeks. 88 per cent use low-fat products regularly. 78 per cent believe they are eating healthier than they were three years ago. This is a powerful appetite suppressant that gets rats to eat 95 per cent less food and still feel full. Scientists believe that this element may exist in the hypothalamus, which regulates appetite and other basic behaviour in humans. When it is out of whack, we overeat. So what do we do? We join weight-loss clubs and clinics. We buy thousands of dollars of "diet" food. We order every kind of fat-burning piece of equipment offered. Never mind the fact that with some part of our brain we know we are too fat and that it isn't good for us. Never mind that we would like to lose weight and reduce our risk of dying young. But how? How can we get our insides thinner, our blood pressure down, and our cholesterol under control when we can't even manage to get into that size ten? Relax. It's going to be easy. *29\323\8* |
